Master's Programs in Geology

Advance. Prepare. Compete.

Employers are looking for candidates with advanced degrees and practical skills that allow them to immediately step into key roles. Earning your master’s degree in Geology from SIU will ensure you’re fully prepared for professional opportunities and have the training necessary to succeed.

Graduate students in Geology at SIU work on problems across the discipline, in areas ranging from traditional subfields, such hydrogeology and geophysics, to rapidly growing areas such as planetary geology. We also encourage our students to adopt interdisciplinary approaches in their research.

Master of Science Degree

The Master of Science in Geology is intended to expand the knowledge, skills, and specialized training in geological topics. A thesis is required. The courses taken will be determined by interests of the individual student, but must be approved by the student’s program advisory committee.

Master of Arts Degree

The Master of Arts Degree (non-thesis option) is open to post baccalaureate students with degrees in earth science, geology, or related fields. It is intended to expand the knowledge, skills, and specialized training in geological topics.

Concentrations

Students develop specific expertise by choosing from one of two concentrations that are available in both our Master of Science and Master of Arts programs: Environmental Geology and Geospatial Analysis. Students work with their advisor and committee to determine appropriate courses related to their professional interests.
