The Department of Geology at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale has extensive course offerings and research opportunities for undergraduates majoring in geology. The far-ranging backgrounds of the geology faculty, the curriculum, the individual attention to students, the state-of-the-art research facilities, and our location close to a great variety of geologic settings combine to make SIU's geology program one of the most exciting in the United States.
Geology is integral to the resolution of such global problems as environmental pollution, adequate reserves of non-renewable energy sources, groundwater protection and resources, and scarcity of industrially critical ore deposits.
Admittedly, many of us didn't think about Geology as a major when we were starting college - we "discovered" geology once we took an introductory class in college.

The capstone experience for undergraduate geology majors is a 6-week field course held in Montana and Wyoming, and based in Red Lodge, MT.
SIU has run one of the best field camps in the U.S. every summer for over 40 years.
